Pickleball Doubles Strategy: 10 Tactics That Actually Win
DinkUp Team ยท July 2026
Doubles is pickleball's real game, and it's won with position and patience, not power. These ten tactics are the difference between a 3.5 team and a 4.0 team โ none require a better forehand.
The big three
- 1. Get to the kitchen line โ together. The team that controls the non-volley line wins the point majority. Move up as a unit; a staggered team has a hole in the middle.
- 2. Master the third-shot decision. Drop when they're at the net, drive when they're moving or off-balance. The best teams choose deliberately, not by habit.
- 3. Return deep, then sprint. A deep return buys the time you need to reach the kitchen before the third shot arrives.
Positioning & movement
- 4. Move like you're tied by rope. Slide together laterally; the middle belongs to whoever's forehand is there โ call it in advance.
- 5. Follow the ball, shade the line. When your shot goes cross-court, shift with it โ most passes come back through the gap you just left.
- 6. Reset under pressure. When you're getting attacked, block soft into the kitchen instead of counterpunching. Neutral beats losing fast.
The mental game
- 7. Talk every point: "mine / yours / bounce it / no" โ four words, fewer lost points.
- 8. Target the weaker mover, not the weaker player. Feet break down before hands do.
- 9. Speed up only off high balls. Attacking from below net height is how you donate points.
- 10. Win the error war. Most rec games are lost, not won โ the team making fewer unforced errors takes it. Boring, true, decisive.
